KSB 3.9 — The role of leadership in contemporary technology based organisations

Situation

In contemporary technology organisations, leadership is not limited to management roles but often involves guiding technical direction and establishing practices that enable teams to deliver reliable systems. During my work at 100AND10% and in early discussions around the Client_2’s application, several technical decisions highlighted how leadership influences the success of technology initiatives.

Task

My role was to contribute technical insight during discussions around development practices and system architecture. This required considering how technology choices would affect the organisation’s ability to collaborate effectively, maintain systems over time, and deliver high-quality digital solutions.

Action

During internal discussions about development workflows at 100AND10%, I analysed the risks associated with informal code management and produced a proposal recommending the adoption of GitHub Pro as the organisation’s primary version control platform. This proposal demonstrated how leadership decisions around tooling and workflow can directly influence the effectiveness of development teams.

Similarly, during the early planning of the Client_2’s application I contributed to discussions around system architecture, recommending a structured application design rather than replicating existing spreadsheet workflows. This emphasised the importance of establishing clear technical direction early in a project so that development teams can build scalable and maintainable systems.

Result

These experiences reinforced my understanding that leadership in technology organisations often involves setting clear technical direction and establishing practices that enable teams to perform effectively. By influencing development practices and architectural decisions, technology leaders can create the conditions that allow teams to deliver reliable systems and support long-term organisational capability.
